Being originally from Connecticut, trips to NYC were something I did frequently since childhood.  After I moved to Illinois last year, I knew I would not get back to NYC very much.  When I visited my family in Connecticut this first Christmas after moving to the midwest, I knew I had to go to New York!  Especially after the events of September 11, I wanted to go and see Ground Zero, as well as the memorial wall at St. Paul's Chapel.

For all the times I visited NYC, I rarely took pictures, since I lived nearby and didn't feel the need to.  This time was different, since I don't live in the northeast anymore, and with 9/11, so I took the following pictures.

nyc1.JPG (61521 bytes) The memorial wall at St. Paul's Chapel, Broadway & Fulton Street (and below)

nyc13.JPG (46958 bytes)
nyc7.JPG (58550 bytes)
nyc10.JPG (40857 bytes)

nyc12.JPG (17314 bytes)

This picture was taken from Broadway facing west (a block south of St. Paul's Chapel).  It is of the ramp leading up to the new viewing platform overlooking Ground Zero.  Unfortunately, we didn't get to go on that, as it opened the next day and we were only in town for the day.

The building you see is Three World Financial Center, next to it is the Winter Garden dome.

nyc11.JPG (49800 bytes) There were so many visitors to the site. At the memorial wall, in particular it was crowded, but everyone was respectful.  Among the people visiting, it didn't have a touristy feeling. Unfortunately, there was an overabundance of street vendors with patriotic NYC souvenirs.
nyc2.JPG (50583 bytes) A few pictures from Ground Zero.  All three were taken from the intersection of Barclay Street at Church Street, facing south.  We were right next to St. Peter's Church. The building with the flag is Deutsche Bank, known as One Banker's Trust Plaza Building. Prior to September 11, our view of this building at this point would have been obscured by Two WTC and Five WTC.  See  Damage Overview Map

nyc5.JPG (42051 bytes) A display at a store called Chelsea Jeans, a block from Ground Zero at 196 Broadway (across from St. Paul's Chapel).  They kept a section of the store untouched from September 11, and encased it in a glass display.

nyc14.JPG (28979 bytes) Mr. Peanut sign in Times Square
nyc15.JPG (52147 bytes) One of Macy's window displays depicting 7 decades of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. This one is a more current one of the Radio City Rockettes.
nyc16.JPG (48682 bytes) This display is from the 70's and features Michael Jackson and of course, a balloon of Betty Boop!
nyc17.JPG (40698 bytes)
nyc18.JPG (35649 bytes) Raggedy Ann balloon depicted going past the Howard Johnson's restaurant in Times Square
nyc19.JPG (54352 bytes) Macy*s, the world's largest department store -- Herald Square
bev.JPG (29720 bytes) This picture is a bit unusual!  You can't go to NYC without being hit up by panhandlers...well, I saw this man attempting to collect money with a really unusual, and honest sign. I thought it was a different approach and asked if I could take his picture.  He said only if my mother was in the picture with him.  My mother, a character and good sport, agreed.  This is a family website, so I used a blue dot to cover part of the sign!  But I'm sure you'll get the idea!  LOL
Me with some NYC firefighters who were posing for pictures outside of Grand Central Terminal.
